Beti Bachao Beti Padhao Objectives

The main agenda of this yojana is to mark the issue of imbalance of Child Sex Ratio and special care to the girl child.
The objectives of pursuing the agenda are:
1. Prevent gender-biased sex selective elimination
2. Ensure the survival and protection of the girl child
3. Ensure education and participation of the girl child through coordinated and convergent efforts.

Beti Bachao Beti Padhao Scheme Details and Benefits

The Child Sex Ratio (CSR) was persistent from 1961. But it declined from 976 in 1961 to 945 in 1991. The CSR data of 2001 shows that there were 927 girls per 1,000 boys. And the CSR had dropped further to a national average of 918 in 2011. In 2011, CSR has declined in 429 districts out of 640 districts and 244 districts were below 918.

Hence the primary focus
1. To focus on the CSR (Child Sex Ratio) and SRB (Sex Ratio at Birth) data for improvement.
2. To monitor the districts with critically low CSR.
3. To promote various programmes and initiatives for the awareness of CSR and the girl child.

After considering these statistics, the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao Yojana was proposed to introduce in 2014 with the purposes:

1. Improvement in the declining scenario of CSR in the last two decades.
2. To focus on issues related to women empowerment at the grass-roots level.

The Indian Census of 2011 claimed pre-birth and post-birth discriminations manifested through gender-biased sex selection in health, nutrition, education and women disempowerment. Confronting these statistical data, the scheme was launched in 2015 mainly to the clusters in Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Bihar, and Delhi with INR 100 crores funding. The scheme was first launched at Panipat, Haryana on 22 January 2015. According to the 2011 census, Haryana holds the bottom position among states in Child Sex Ratio (CSR).

Implementation

1. The scheme was launched in 100 districts with an expansion to 61 districts more. The awareness shows an improvement in the Child Sex Ratio between 2014 to 2016.
2. Displaying birth statistics, establishing the brand of BBBP, rewarding local champions on BBBP, enabling education for girls, prevention of child marriage, BBBP theme-based campaigns, etc. are the steps taken by the Government of India.
3. The Multi-Sectoral Intervention and the Media & Advocacy campaign of BBBP are introduced to additional 244 districts. The Alert District Media & Advocacy with positive reinforcement to girl child has been approached to the rest of 235 districts.
4. The Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi launched the Pan India Expansion of Beti Bachao Beti Padhao at Jhunjhunu, Rajasthan on 8 March 2018.
5. “BetiJanmotsav” is introduced at the district level to celebrate.

Indian Actress Madhuri Dixit was the brand ambassador of the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao Scheme in 2015.
