What is procrastination?

The term “procrastination” is often associated with a negative connotation. It is often associated with “shirkers,” “slackers,” and “lazy people.”
Procrastination is one of the most common issues that students face. For many, it is a difficult hurdle to overcome. However, it is possible to learn how to overcome procrastination.

What causes procrastination?

One of the most common causes of procrastination is the need for instant gratification. Students often procrastinate because they want to feel like they are achieving something right away.
Another cause of procrastination is having an unrealistic goal. You could have an overinflated sense of your own worth or an unrealistic expectation of how much work you should be doing.
In addition, you may be afraid of failure, which will prevent you from even starting.
The final cause of procrastination is the need for a reward. Sometimes we put off completing a task because we want the reward or feel that we owe it to ourselves.
Rather than looking for rewards in the outcome of the task itself, we must understand that the reward comes from the process itself.

Ways to Overcome Procrastination

I have listed 5 of the most effective ways to overcome procrastination below. If you implement these things, I am pretty sure you’ll start valuing your time.

01. Identify the Cause of Procrastination

Start by identifying exactly what causes you to procrastinate. Ask yourself if your procrastination is a result of external factors such as time, location, or people.
If you find that there is not a specific cause, try to figure out what is making you feel anxious about starting the task. If you can pinpoint the cause of your anxiety, you can work on solving it.

02. Make a To-do-List

If you’re prone to procrastination, the best way to avoid it is by making a to-do list. A to-do list is a list of tasks that you need to complete. It helps you stay on track by reminding you of what you need to do.
You can create a to-do list by creating a list of tasks on your computer or by writing it down on paper. Make sure that you include a deadline for each task.
If you’re making a to-do list for yourself, you want to make sure that you’re realistic with the tasks that you assign yourself. If you set yourself up for failure, you’ll only be frustrated when you fail.

03. Practice Microproductivity

It is common for people to put off tasks because they are too big to handle. That is a convenient excuse, but it won’t help you get anything done.
Instead, you need to learn to break down the task into smaller pieces (microproductivity). This will help you to get the job done sooner.

For example, if you can’t get to the gym, you might try walking a block instead. If you’re not creative, try writing a few sentences instead of just a few words.

If you’re not disciplined, try tackling a small project. All of these things will help you to avoid going into a deep hole of procrastination. Once you’re feeling refreshed, you can tackle the task that you originally wanted to do.
You also need to put in a little time every day for planning. This will help you to stay on track. Also make sure to put in some time for breaks. This will help you get your work done without getting burnt out.

04. Create a schedule

Everyone has their own idea of what success is and what a workday looks like, but there’s one thing that we can all agree on: Procrastination is a thing.
As difficult as it may be, it’s easy to put off a task or a project as long as you have time to do it. But just because time is on your side, doesn’t mean you should wait until the last minute.
Instead, you should set personal deadlines and stick to them. You can do this by creating a schedule.
The schedule should include a list of tasks that need to be completed and the day they need to be completed. You can create the schedule in a spreadsheet or utilize some of the best time management apps like Trello to help organize it.

05. Reward Yourself

You’ve been working hard and you deserve a reward. But, you’re afraid that you’ll never get it done. You fear that you’ll be too busy to celebrate and you’ll just end up feeling guilty.

What’s the answer? Reward yourself!

The key is to not go overboard. For example, if you are working on a project, make sure that you reward yourself with 20 minutes of uninterrupted time on your favourite TV show after you complete the task.
That 20 minutes of uninterrupted time will be enough to relieve any guilt you might have, but not enough to make you feel guilty. If you’re done with the project, reward yourself with a night out on the town. If you’re worried about being too busy, reward yourself with a paid day off.
