What is Maglev trains?

  • Maglev stands for magnetic levitation.
  • The Maglev Rail system hovers in the air, due to magnetic levitation, thus the vehicles have no physical contact with the railway track.
  • Thus the system becomes highly energy-efficient, allows to reach speeds of easily up to 500 km/h, and significantly reduces the total cost of system ownership.

Why is it in news?

BHEL recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with SwissRapide AG to bring Maglev trains (magnetic levitation) to India.
