Why is Mucormycosis in news recently?

  • Mucormycosis is an uncommon fungal infection.
  • The infection which is caused by mold from the family called Mucorales.
  • This fungus is present everywhere – in the atmosphere, ecosystem, soil, etc.
  • This fungal infection spread is rising due to COVID-19.
  • The COVID- 19 weakens the immunity system in the human body and thus makes it vulnerable for Mucormycosis.
  • Concern: The disease commonly affects the sinuses or the lungs after inhaling fungal spores from the air, or the skin after the fungus enters the skin through a cut, burn, or another type of skin injury. The alarming fact is that it can infect any part of the body.
  • Symptoms: Irritation in eyes, lung pain, the problem in inhaling, skin irritation etc.
