The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) has notified 250.66 sq km around Radhanagri Wildlife Sanctuary (RWS) as eco-sensitive zone.
- It is a wildlife sanctuary and natural World Heritage Site, situated in Kolhapur district, Maharashtra.
- It was notified as a wildlife sanctuary in 1985.
- Radhanagri Wildlife Sanctuary (RWS) is situated in the Sahyadri hills in the Western Ghats.
- Some Krishna River tributaries like Bhogavati River, Dudhganga River, Kallamma River and Dirba River flow through the sanctuary area.
The eco-sensitive zone acts as a transition zone from areas of high protection to less protection. The National Wildlife Action Plan 2002-2016 had identified eco-sensitive zone as “vital ecological corridor links” which must be protected to prevent isolation of fragments of biodiversity.
