It also aims at encouraging people as well as individuals such as governments, businesses and companies, educational institutions and public organizations to take appropriate measures in order to protect the environment.

Origin of the World Environment Day

World Environment Day was first announced in 1972 by the United Nations at the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment which was held between  5–16 June 1972.
The Stockholm Conference had resulted in a significant output on the integration of human interactions & the environment. After two years, in 1974 the first World Environment Day was held with the theme “Only One Earth”. Although the World Environment Day celebrations have been organised annually since 1974, it was 1987, when it was decided to rotate the centre of the environmental awareness activities through selecting different host countries.

What is the Importance of World Environment Day?

This day is celebrated to promote people to change their attitude towards the environment for making a safe future. One should always be conscious of their activities and strive to keep our surroundings clean and healthy, protect the natural resources.
The World Environment Day was organized by United Nations with the aim of raising awareness on environmental issues in order to bring about a better future for future generations.

What can we do for World Environment Day?

On World Environment Day, we should all be aware of the impacts that our actions have on the environment. Our actions are being negatively affected by the environmental conditions in which we live. We are affecting our environment; we are contributing to its destruction and pollution. We need to take responsibility for our actions and take action towards a better world.

Celebrations and Observance

The planet is in a state of crisis. World Environment Day (WED) is marked by a multitude of commemorative events across the globe — from parades to marches, to workshops and round-the-clock candlelight vigils.

The United Nations mobilizes the knowledge, skills and practices of local communities and indigenous peoples to support their participation in environmental decision-making.
The International Polar Year, 2007-2008 focused on the impacts of climate change on ecosystems and polar communities, other snow-covered regions of the world, and the resulting global consequences. Over the next few years, WED has grown into a platform to raise awareness of issues facing our environments, such as air pollution, plastic pollution, illegal wildlife trade, sustainable consumption, sea level rise and food security, to name a few.
World leaders from around the world came together to discuss how to raise environmental awareness, and that’s when WED was created.

The World Environment Day events are a great way to make people aware of causes that are important to the planet’s survival. Anyone wishing to make a personal contribution to this World Environment Day can promote the day on social networks with the hashtags #WorldEnvironmentDay or #WithNature.

Concern

Since we discovered fire and learned to discover things to make our lives comfortable, we started exploiting and destroying our planet’s ecosystems. Today in every three seconds, the world is losing enough forests to cover a football ground and over the last century, we have destroyed half of the planet’s wetlands. As much as 50 per cent of our coral reefs have already been destroyed and the alarming fact is that if we do not act fast more than 90 per cent of coral reefs could be lost by 2050, even if global warming is limited to an increase of 1.5°C.

We the humans are encroaching on the carbon sinks, like forests and peatlands. Ecosystem loss is catalysing the potentially catastrophic climate change. Climate change is causing extreme and erratic weather patterns, global warming, impact in the arctic in the form of melting permafrost, glacial retreat and sea ice loss, destruction of coral reefs, habitat loss of animals around the planet. By shrinking the area of natural habitat for animals, we have created ideal conditions for pathogens – including coronaviruses – to spread. The emergence of COVID-19 has also amplified the disastrous consequences of ecosystem loss.

Thus we need to work at our individual level to combat the global issue. Individual awareness should be coupled with institutional initiatives. We just need to understand that only with healthy ecosystems can we enhance people’s livelihoods, counteract climate change and stop the further collapse of biodiversity.

The significance of the World Environment Day celebration in the context of covid-19 pandemic

The world, as well as India, was compelled to go into the lockdown phase to curb the pandemic spread, the lockdowns or restrictions helped the environment to breathe better air quality for a while, but the relief was only for the air. According to the Central Pollution Control Board, India has produced 45,308 tonnes of biomedical waste between June 2020 and May 10, 2021, an average daily generation of 132 tonnes of Covid-19 related waste. This is the tremendous amount of addition of biomedical waste a day during Covid-19 days.

Now there is another scenario to look into. The industries, factories that faced a downfall in production, pushed for even higher production just after the lockdown rules diluted. Hence the vehicular pollution was curbed just during the lockdown, but after the lockdown, the pollution intensified with the industrial waste in the pursuit of more output.

Now to cover up the unprecedented environmental crisis, inclusive awareness is the only key. World Environment Day celebration could be a perfect platform to aware individuals of the importance of reducing plastic footprint, with the help of a comprehensive strategy & a comprehensive roadmap.

Conclusion: World Environment Day

The planet is our home, and the only way for us to live a sustainable life in future is to save the environment. The environment is what makes us who we are: our languages, skin colour, culture and heritage, food preferences. No matter who you are or where you come from, your actions will have an impact on future generations to come. If we Do not do act now to change the present situation in which we live today then we could be easily judged as not being part of the solution, but being part of the problem.

The World Environment Day will be a crucial part of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021-2030). It is a global mission to restore billions of hectares, from forests to farmlands, from the top of mountains to the depth of the sea, which is already lost or are on the verge of losing.
